What is XPS Foam Board？

Extruded Polystyrene Foam starts as solid pellets of polystyrene resin. We first feed the plastic pellets into an extruder where they are melted and mixed with critical additives to form a viscous liquid. Then we inject a blowing agent to expand the plastic product. Under well-controlled heat and pressure, the plastic mixture is forced through a mould to form the desired shape. Finally, the rigid foam is trimmed to a custom size and this is the final XPS foam board.

Features of XPS Insulation Board

(1) Superior thermal Insulation
XPS insulation board has dense surface layer and closed-cell structure inner layer. Its thermal conductivity is much lower than EPS, so it has better thermal insulation performance than EPS. For the same exterior walls, its thickness can be less than other types of insulation materials.

In summary, the biggest difference between XPS foam boards and EPS is the cell structure, therefore, compared to XPS, EPS has worse water absorption and a lower R-value per inch.

Fire Rating of XPS Foam Board

XPS foam boards are mainly used for the exterior wall insulation of buildings and have good thermal insulation properties. In China, the exterior wall insulation materials are divided into 4 levels: Class A (non-combustible), B1 (flame-retardant), B2 (combustible) and B3 (flammable). XPS foam boards are organic materials so they are generally divided into 3 levels: B1 (flame-retardant), B2 (combustible) and B3 (flammable).

In China, XPS foam boards must satisfy the fire rating requirement of at least Class B2. According to the Chinese national standard GB/T 2406.2, Class B2 is equivalent to an oxygen index greater than 26 and Class B1 is equivalent to an oxygen index greater than 30. Customers are often more interested in how Chinese fire ratings correspond to those of European standards. In general, Chinese national standard B1 level corresponds to EN13501 level B and C, while Chinese B2 level corresponds to European level D and E.

The common method to judge the fire rating of XPS foam board is by lighting it on fire with a lighter. And you can also use this method to judge the quality of the XPS insulation board. If it is easy to ignite and can not self-extinguish, is the ordinary extruded polystyrene board; if ignited before removing the open flame, the XPS foam board can self-extinguish, then it is flame retardant XPS foam board; if the open flame point can not ignite the board, that is non-combustible materials. Flame retardant XPS boards need to add different amounts of flame retardants to achieve proper flame retardancy, the higher the fire rating, the higher the price.

Thickness
Most customers require a thickness of 35mm-85mm, if the required thickness is the same as this range, the price of polystyrene foam board will be less than that of various other thicknesses.

Density

Surfaces
