What Is The Polystyrene Recycle Machine?

What is polystyrene? Polystyrene is a versatile plastic used to make a wide variety of consumer products. As a hard, solid plastic, it is applied to manufacture products that require clarity, such as food packaging and laboratory ware. Polystyrene also is made into a foam material, called expanded polystyrene (EPS) or extruded polystyrene (XPS), which is valued for its insulating and cushioning properties.


XPS is widely used as insulation material in the construction industry. Extruded polystyrene is used in construction and other environments by different industries because of its high quality, durability, and wide adaptability. It can play a good role in insulation and heat preservation in different environments, such as water, cold, heat, and pressure. The lifetime of XPS is about 70 years for construction insulation projects. So it is not like daily consumables, almost no waste in the use-phase.


However, in the XPS production process, about 10% of the XPS board quality is not up to the standard and then classified into the waste gas recovery category. At this time, we can collect these XPS waste materials in a large silo, and then transport them to special polystyrene recycle machine. The recycling system consists of two extruders (primary extruder and secondary extruder), screen changer, slot die, pelletizer, and also includes a heavy-duty crusher, which can crush XPS foam boards and EPS solid blocks. This is a very economical XPS recycling way. We can directly use these recycled XPS particles to make XPS foam boards.

This recycling system can also support EPS recycling, but EPS foam is much lighter than XPS foam. The EPS density is 15-20kg/m³, and the XPS density is 28-45kg/m³. So before granulating, we will use a compactor to compact EPS foam to EPS blocks. 


EPS is also one kind of insulation material, but its insulation property is not better than XPS. It is also widely used in the packaging industry. In our daily life, we can often see all kinds of different EPS packaging boxes. Since EPS foam is very light, it is not economical to transport EPS foam to the XPS recycling site. We installed our compactors in our partners who have the channel to collect EPS foam. The compactor can convey a large amount of EPS material to crush them into pieces through the conveyor. Then, under the squeezing force, the broken EPS is compacted into solid EPS blocks, which can be stacked on pallets. The compressed EPS blocks can be sold to manufacturers with XPS recycling machines, rather than simply thrown away as garbage. The compacted density of EPS blocks is about 200kg/m³. Therefore, compared with ordinary EPS foam products, the compacted EPS foam can significantly reduce transportation and handling costs.
